Storm Chili & Chocolate

Hello People!

I would first just like to say that I am extremely lucky to have avoided any flooding, damage or power loss due to Hurricane Sandy and wish all of my friends downtown and in NJ the best in getting back power and restoring and damage to homes. Thankfully we were safe here in our place and were well prepared for the storm with food, water and flashlights.

Last night was probably the darkest and quietest I have ever experienced our street since the building across from ours and street lights were all out of power last night.

Here is a picture of one of the subway stations. This is crazy! I am just so thankful that we were not caught in the worst of it and are all safe and sound and that I have so many friends that checked in with me to see if everything was a-OK!

Now that Y’all know the updates from Sandy (which by the way…I couldn’t resist singing Grease songs and we watched the movie in her honor “Sandy can’t you see…that I’m in misery” …ok it is in bad taste, but we couldn’t resist!) Anywho…let me show yall my cooking endeavors as of late.  I had a friend travel abroad to Iceland and bring me back what can only be described as “a sh*t ton of chocolate” I did my best to not dive face first into this pile. However, the timing couldn’t have been worse as it was a certain time of the month when my junk food cravings hit with a vengeance. I usually eat very healthy and  don’t have sweets except for smoothies or the occasional piece of dark chocolate (even then, I’m talking 85-90% cocoa) However, this week I was craving junk food like a mad woman! So I had some of the chocolate, but also got a bit resourceful and used some of it for our Intimate Apparel Club bake sale.

Also …not to self: Brownie batter and hormonal cravings are not a great mix….I definitely did my share of bowl licking and brownie “testing” (what? someone has to make sure they’re edible!)

I made one batch of brownies then covered them with melted chocolate from a couple of the bars I got as a gift. They were very very good!

Also, if you ever have a pan of brownies that are too fudgey (apparently this isn’t a word?) and gooey to get out of the pan neatly, simply roll them into brownie balls and cover in more chocolate then refrigerate. Voila! Brownie batter truffles are born! These babies would be fudge brownies with peanut butter chips and almonds covered in milk chocolate… or as I like to call them: “crack balls”. Im glad we gave these to the bake sale because they never would have survived a day around me. Seriously yummy!

Since the weather has been getting colder up here, a chili & cornbread craving hit me once the chocolate one subsided (thank goodness) I wanted to make a good vegetarian chili and decided to wing it and throw a bunch of stuff in a pot, but it turned out really great and the perfect comfort food to have for waiting out the storm inside all day.

I combined

1/2 a 280z can diced tomatos

1 can diced fire roasted tomatos (these from TJs were quite spicy)

1 can white kidney beans

1 can black beans

4 stalks celery

1/2 a sweet onion

1 small can green ciles

1 T Chili Powder

1 tsp red pepper flakes

1 tsp garlic powder  (fresh would be better, but I only had the spice)

1 tsp Cumin

1/2 tsp Paprika

salt & pepper to taste.

I also crumbled a block of firm tofu and fried it in olive oil and the same chili spices to replicate  a ground beef texture for the chili. Once I put it all together along with some cheese, it was a perfect fall dinner!

I also made pumpkin cornbread to go with this which is really yummy. I did use a bread mix, but replaced all the oil with pumpkin. Really yummy! my Nana on my mother’s side makes the most amazing skillet cornbread from scratch and this made me a little nostalgic for my Alabama family.

well have a good rest of the week! I am out of school today and possibly tomorrow as well so this could potentially be a one day school week for me (which means a chance to get all caught up on my work)

next post will be an update of my Halloweekend! The pics are hilarious and Im excited to share our shenanigans!

Question:

Do you get cravings for sweets or junk food?

If so do you indulge a bit or go by the “out of sight out of mind” mentality and not keep any around?

My first Bra and Fall Cooking

Hey Hey and Hello peeps!!

Can I just star out by saying how much I miss posting on here regularly?! I feel so out of the loop when I don’t keep the posts up to date. Even though I’m only in my own little tiny world of this giant blogosphere, I’ve come to love sharing a bit of my life with y’all each week. So here we go!!

In a short update, school has officially started to take over my life again and it’s only getting worse from now on.(optimistic much? haha)  Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE what I do, but it is time  life consuming! My teacher literally laughed at us when me and my roommate were talking about going on dates. “What? haha you don’t have time for dating! You should be doing sewing” were her words….sad part is….it’s completely accurate. So I have school, my internship (which got more intense as well since the main intern left for a job and I had to learn everything lik….now!) school projects, a design contest to prepare for as well as any remainder of a social life all the while trying to fit in gym time too! phew! exhausting!

But I do have some very fun pictures of both the fashion and food type to share with y’all!

My school does “fieldtrips” where we can go and see clothing archives of historical and vintage garments for inspiration. These historical corsets and amazing and I can’t even begin to imagine getting cinched into that every day! some days anything other than a sports bra feels too much right?

I am also in love with these vintage slips. I could completely see an updated version of this one for  a dress in Urban Outfitters or Anthropology.

Here is a vintage Madame Gres Evening gown. This to me goes beyond just being clothing and is truly an art masterpiece…so inspirational and I can’t get enough of the color. Anything turquoise is my favorite.

Also Fun Fact: In most evening gowns, there is a complete infrastructure of corsetry/bra like structure to make it appear smooth and sleek on the outside.

Also…Exciting news……I  mad my very first bra!

woop woop! I am a big girl now!

This is the lace/ribbon/elastic that was all hand dyed to match (hello sexy purple hands afterwards haha) And it’s hard to tell in these phone pics, but the little dots are very small crystals. I had a little too much fun bedazzling it, but our teacher is sparkle-crazy so she was ok with the glitz. : ) I’m pretty happy with the way it came out, but I’m even more excited to do a corset for our next project!

Now on to the yummy stuff. FOOD!

So one of my all time favorite foods is spaghetti squash. I get so excited when squash season comes along in fall because I love them all…spaghetti, Scorn,(<–haha “scorn squash” ? I meant Acorn) Butternut. So good, healthy and versatile.

This is one of my favorite recipes to make with spaghetti squash. It’s pretty much baked spaghetti, but with squash instead of noodles. Super healthy, filling, vegetarian & Gluten free and yummy!

Start by cutting the squash in half and try to come away from the experience with 10 fingers (these suckers and pretty tough to cut through)

Drizzle the halves with olive oil, salt, pepper and Italian seasonings, then bake for 30-45min at 425 in the oven until the squash is tender, then scrape away with a fork until all the “strands” come loose from the outer skin.

I then I made a mixture of herbed ricotta cheese. I didn’t realize I got the fat free version until I went to use it…not the best…I definitely recommend regular full fat cheese. This one had a funny after taste, but  I doctored it up with salt, pepper, onions, garlic, basil and cumin.

I layered squash, sauce, the ricotta mixture, onions and Trader Joe’s soy beef, then stuck it back in the oven for another 30min at 350.

So so good and filling for cold weather and this lasted me for almost all my dinners for the week. I have so little time to cook that making huge dishes on the weekend really helps me save time and eat healthy during the week (although I still hit up my local Whole Foods about 2-3 times a week…it’s just SO good and can’t not go inside)

Well lovelies, I’m happy to finally update again. From now until graduation I don’t see myself having time to do a ton of updates, but I’ll try to post the exciting stuff as it comes up.

PS: I am already getting all geared up for this Halloweekend! SO excited. Me and my roommate are going to be Dora the Explorer and Swiper the fox. Easy, comfortable costumes to make and it should be fun speaking in what little spanish I know for the evening!

Question:

What are you being for Halloween? What has been the best/funniest/most creative costume you have seen?

What’s your favorite fall squash if you have one?

September FPP Reveal!

I have some very exciting stuff to share. This month was my first time participating in the Foodie Pen Pal monthly swap and I have been not so patiently waiting to write about all the awesome goodies I received!

I had a great time looking for treats for my foodie pen pal as well. I feel like there are so so many great products and unique companies around here, I was more than happy to share some foodie finds from my little bubble here in NY.

My Pen Pal was from Hawaii and sent me a really awesome assortment of goods from various regions seeing as Hawaii’s food identity is very diverse and has influences from many many other countries. It was really exciting to see products so different from my everyday items and get a little taste (pun intended hardy har har!) of another state and culture.

Here’s the loot!

Cute Wrapping

Plums, Popcorn seasoning (this was so good) peanut butter cookies, dried green mango, tofu seasoning.

Lemon drink mix, coconut dessert, won ton chips (also ridiculously yummy)                      I absolutely loved this cute surf themed fabric and the card is so beautiful too…I see my next inspiration a being retro Island/beach theme.

I got the goods for my box from one of my favorite places in the city. Chelsea Market. It’s a food market that has a ton of local shops as well as a regular grocery/produce store and weekly sample sales too! (don’t even get me started on how sad I was when I missed the Free People sale)

This one bakery always has really yummy looking treats and some of the most ridiculous & creative cupcakes! They even had  a Spongebob one! haha

In other foodie news, I have tried a couple new drinks and items this week. I have been so so super ultra mega busy this week and ended up pulling another all-nighter wednesday! Last night was the first night I got to fully rest and today I feel awesome! so because of that, I also had zero food in my place (Im talking ketchup packets, celery and popcorn ….nada else) so I ate out a lot. (aka: too much whole foods)

I tried a new to me drink Kombucha! I loved this stuff and now have another reason to make my weekly Whole Foods trips. (I’m addicted)

Then this weekend I traded in my Kombucha & healthy enzymes for this monster! ha! It’s all about balance people! This would be the giantest beer I have ever had! The official kickoff for Oktoberfest here in NYC was at a Beer Garden in Midtown, and seeing as we were in that area, we decided to stop by and celebrate. I actually couldn’t even finish this seeing as it was half my size and I felt like a munchkin drinking it!

Speaking of munchkins…..

I also have been hitting up the DD right across the street from us. This is egg white flatbread with pumpkin coffee. Not too bad actually.

Also DD now has Pumpkin Munchkins! so yummy!

(photo: http://findingradiance.com/2011/10/04/october-goals/)

Also I just picked up pancake mix and pumpkin from TJ’s to have pumpkin pancakes! Fall food is in full swing over here! So excited!

Well I am off to dye some more fabric, do a little drawing and hopefully watch a little Falcons football. It’s gonna be a lazy workday here.

What is your favorite fall food?

Do you get in on the pumpkin craze that comes with October?

Update Post # Due

Hey hey! Happy Sunday Funday to y’all!

It is around 2am and I just finished homework for tomorrow (phew!) but darn it, I am sticking to what I said and finishing another update post today!…er well I guess it’s technically tomorrow.

I think since things are really starting to rev up as far as schoolwork, I want to give y’all another look at what I do with my time. On saturday I stayed up until 4am and then all day and night on Sunday drawing technical sketches (or what we call “flats”) or various underpinnings.

It is possibly the most tedious work to do, but I really enjoy making all the lace patterns perfect and getting every little detail into the flat. When I’m in school, my perfectionist OCD side really kicks in. This is good and bad. Most of my stuff is done pretty meticulously, but it take me FOR-EV-ER!

I know school in full swing when I pull my first all-nighter of the semester. As terrible as it is to not sleep, me and my roommate make the most of it. There was lots of blasting old school boy band music with singing and Wii Just Dance breaks in between sketching. I think around 4am is when the lack of sleep/over caffeinated  crazies really set in and the party gets silly. Our neighbors just love us : )

This past saturday before heading to one the the best concerts I have been to in a long time, we had a little fabric dyeing party (ok…a “party” is a bit of an overstatement haha) It was messy and frustrating and fun all at the same time! For my internships I have done lots of fabric dyeing, so I was actually pretty excited to come up with a custom color for our current bra project.

It was a loooong process the get the color I wanted (did I mention I was a perfectionist?) but I like dyeing because it is like a fun science experiment.

And not to mention, you come away with some pretty sexy lookin skin! Oh hey zombie hands! These are my roommates hands, mine weren’t nearly that bad, but my nails definitely need some TLC and another coat of polish after this!

After our “colorful” morning (hehe so corny I know!) we went to a concert in Central Park. This was a benefit concert and featured several bands as well as appearances from celebrities & athletes who were speaking about the cause. I was mainly excited to get to see one of my all time favorte bands The Black Keys!

The show was amazing! I love concerts and seeing live music always seems to energize me and spark even more interested in the group. The weather was perfect as well. I will say though, that my highlight of the night was seeing a surprise performance from John Legend! It was so strange, because literally 2 seconds before he came onto the stage I said to my friend “you know who I really like? John Legend!” I was going on about his voice, his face, his overall great classy, attractive nature, when all of a sudden “and please welcome to the stage, John Legend” I nearly fainted from excitement! Its like I knew he was there. He sang Imagine, which is one of my all time favorite songs…and it was truly just magical all around. I was definitely in my happy place! I will try to figure out how to post some videos when I get the chance.

Have a lovely night….well day now…and happy October!

I foresee so much pumpkin, coffee, Halloween decorations, baking and sweater wearing in my future, I’m a little giddy for fall to finally be here!

Update post #1

Hey Y’all!!!

Goodness gracious! I have had so much going on, but little time to post! It feels god to update and this is just my first installment of catch up posts to come. I think for this first month I was a bit in denial that the whole waking up early, doing homework and not going out as much on weekends thing was actually happening. It has been crazy busy this week and we had wednesday off of school, so it has been wonderful to lounge about, get some work done and be lazy in general!

This past weekend, I was lucky enough to get to see a broadway show courtesy of my school offering $20 tickets! Me and my roommate got ticket to see one of my all time favorite musicals

CHICAGO!

It was fun and I may or may not have used jazz hands way too much when we left the theater.

After the show, we got a late dinner at a thai place I often pass that looked pretty cool. My food was pretty lackluster  (I blame the fact that we ordered right before the kitchen closed) but the interior of the restaurant/bar was pretty swanky!

I loved this giant chandelier in the restaurant.

Then on sunday we went to a baby shower uptown for a classmate of mine. (yes she is married and all that jazz and will be a wonderful mother)

Since she is a fellow design student, there was a sewing/craft theme for the shower. They put all different buttons on the stems of the glasses so you could tell which one was yours ….clever! right? and the individual french toast w/ syrup in the cups! great ideas all around!

The food was my favorite kind (brunchy) the zucchini bread was ridonculous to say the least.

In other foodie news, I have been quite the little baker this past week. I really needed to be doing homework, but felt hormonal, bored and overall in need of a great distractions so naturally I turned to cooking!

I made Apple Cinnamon Protein muffins to use up so many of our extra apples and even though I pretty much made up the recipe on the spot, I think they came out pretty good!

It also was an excuse to use the Halloween themed muffin cups and weird eyeball decorations I had lying around (I get really into holidays this time of year haha)

Apple Cinnamon Protein Muffins

1 C Oat flour (I just grind oatmeal in my blender)

2 scoops protein powder (vanilla)

2 medium apple chopped into small pieces

1/4 tsp salt

1 tsp Baking Powder

2 tsp Cinnamon (and then another if you’re a cinnamon lover like me)

1/4 C Splenda (or you can use stevia, or sugar)

1 Egg

2 Egg Whites

1/2 C Applesauce

1/3 C Almond Milk

1 tsp Vanilla Extract

Well I do have so much more to update and look forward to showing yall more of my school shenanigans and projects! I recently spent a couple nights test dyeing fabrics. To say it was messy would be an understatement! ha! Well enjoy your weekend and I am mentally planning another update tomorrow.

tata and sleep well!

I’m still here! Huge picture update

Wow!….so so so long ago since I have written on here. I feel like a bad blogger. But hey ya know sometimes that thing called life…and living it….kinda get in the way of my cyber communication with the outside world. watcha gonna do? What I Wore Friday

Hello Partaay people!

So I had this all typed up on Friday, but didn’t get around to finishing everything until today…so here I give you What I Wore Friday…but on Sunday.

Since you have seen what I ate this past week, let me show you what I’ve been wearing. (I’m somewhat embarrassed to say I’m sitting here wearing the same dress I wore yesterday just because I knew no one from school would be seeing me)

Guilty of this on more occasions than I’d like to admit. : )

On Thursday (and friday to intern) I wore this maxi dress I bought.

Then for Fashion’s Night Out, I had a few outfit options

I really just needed an excuse to wear these absolutely ridiculous shoes I borrowed from my sister! They were a good conversation starter, but I’ll be honest, only stayed on all of 30 minutes before I changed into the backup flats I stored in my purse. I’ll always take comfort & the ability to walk over fashion

I ended up going with this outfit because I feel like I wear black too often and need a good dose of color.

I got to wear my green shirt…for a blind date! (exciting and a little scary, but it went well so no complaints) I figure I’d be hard to miss in this.

Well have a fabulous weekend! I am spending my day dyeing fabric & taking apart the bra I got from Amazon all while watching some NFL games (Love how those go together so well!) There’s just something about getting into a good game that makes me a little nostalgic for home and puts me in a good mood.

Question: Ever been on a blind date or set up by a friend?

Are you into the football season & who is your team?

What I ate “Wednesday”

I say “wednesday” because I am actually going to show more pics from my long weekend . I had honestly anticipated my life being more boring and homework filled this whole week, and was going to just do a WIAW post to fill up a page, but I actually had a GREAT weekend filled with friends, food, laughs and lots o relaxation. Soooo let’s get right down to it!

Food  In honor, I will show a quick bit of WIAW

This, plus many snacks and lots and lots of coffee pretty much make up my eats every day. I’m a creature of habit what can I say?

1. Oatmeal with a small pool of that Cookie crack Butter. (soo good!)

2. Veggie and tuna rice paper rolls- These are sooo good and actually easy to make, but definitely make your roommates look at you funny when you whip out these weird rice sheets.

3. Broccoli, kale, TJ’s balls, cheese and marinara. I think I may or may have not made at least five ball jokes while making this. (yes I’m immature…but in real life in person I’m…well I’m probably actually much more ridiculous than in writing!

This weekend, I had outings to a tapas restaurant near NYU, went to Yum Yum thai again and found a new favorite ice cream to rival my number one Peanut Butter Froyo in Bloomingdale’s! Big News!

Sangria & my friend’s “passionate kiss” drink. Our server/bartender was quite cheeky and kept asking her if she would like him to “give her another kiss” haha smoooooth!

in the back are the steak and beet and goat cheese crostini. Anything with beets and goat cheese is always delicious in my book! In the front is the mac & cheese which was pretty awesome! I usually never get Mac & Cheese because….well it’s carbs, butter, cream and cheese…nuff said. But this was wonderfully flavorful and had a little spicy kick that I really enjoyed.

Now this is the best part of the evening. After grabbing tapas, then doing some rooftop wine drinking/ people watching and ogling the amazing apartments we wish we could afford, my friend Sydney and I made our way back, but took a little pit stop for some treats! And I must say…it was Amazeballs (see how I brought it back there ? ?)

This would be Momofuku Milk Bar. I had heard of this place before and all the rave reviews of both the company’s bakery and separate noodle bar. We both got the “cereal milk soft serve” and Syd got a couple of their cookies as well. (I think compost, blueberry pie) But this ice crea….ahhhh…no words!

This ice cream literally tasted like the milk in your bowl after a breakfast of frosted flakes! it was then coated in crunchy, slightly salty cereal crisps (which were also on the bottom too, so just when you were finishing the ice cream and thinking “man I wish I had some more of those crunchy things” BAM! there they were again) We actually held up some sidewalk traffic because  we were just enjoying it so much!

if thats not foodie love, i don’t know what is!

Since I went out Friday and Saturday, I decided to spend my Monday holiday doing some homework at a swanky hotel lounge with free wifi before having dinner with some Atlanta friends who are also living here in NYC. I actually know quite a few people from home who also live in the city but rarely see them  because our schedules are always so crazy busy.

Fancy Cappuccino art makes me smile

This hotel is super trendy and everyone has some electronic device. Sometimes I think it’s funny how we could be sharing a couch with 5 other people and literally be within ear shot of each other’s conversations, yet no one brings themselves up from their ipad…so strange. I guess that’s city life though. The more people you pack in, the more you pretend not to notice each other.

Well I will definitely be doing a separate post for fashion and school updates because I do not want this to be a novel of a post. I plan on trying to keep up a more consistent posting schedule.

Oh and in other news, tomorrow is my people’s holiday! (no not southern, pale, blonde or short….but my fellow fashionistas!)

Fashion’s Night Out in happening tomorrow!!!  (and even though I will be in class for most of it. Boo!) I am still super pumped! I personally think we should have this night off because hello! fashion school! It’s like Vogue’s version of the christmas parade & I have yet to figure out what I am wearing. Oh what’s a girl to do! Difficult life decisions happening over here haha!

This happened last year at FNO. Dreams coming true (I have a wee crush on Seth Meyers and was so happy to meet him in person)

TTFN and have a lovely week!

Friday yays!

Hello all!

I truly hope everyone is having a great long weekend! I am having an awesome break so far! I have no class on fridays so I get a 4 day weekend!!! woop woop! Party time! I have had a great week starting school and my weekend has already begun with so many great moments.

Good thing #1

On friday morning I went in to interview for another internship position. I was invited to return to the company I was with in my summer internship , but as they are not offering a paid position I had to decline. Thankfully I applied for, interviewed for and was offered this new paid position!!!! yeeehaw! I am SO excited to be working in a field I truly enjoy, (hello no more serving tables after school!) gaining industry experience, getting paid  and creating a possible job path for myself come the end of this year!!! eeeeeee yay!!!! I was literally beaming and crazily smiling to myself when I got out of the elevator! and I wish I had taken a pic of my interview outfit. It was pretty cute! (but I wear that same fit to intern pretty often, so I’m sure it’ll make another appearance)

#2 The Return of Pumpkin!

I was SO excited when I saw that DD had pumpkin coffe…that I immediately stopped and practically ran in! The iced pumpkin coffee’s really yummy btw. It’s the little things in life that make me smile : ) and it’s only a matter of time people before pumpkin coffee, pancakes, bread, muffins and ice cream starts popping up! ooo yeah! can’t wait for fall!

#3 Shopping Success

Me and the roomie (check out  her blog!) went on a wild goose chase for some bras. We have to purchase 2 identical full coverage bras without padding in a 34B for school. Now let me tell you…no store carries full coverage bras in a B cup because well….girls with small boobs do not need full coverage & support. (we just need “breast decoration” in the words of my professor. haha I love her)  After visiting nearly every major department store, I found just 1 bra in the right style and size. I found it in the very back of a bottom rack and was in shock. I started singing “I’ve got the golden ticket!” …because that’s exactly what it felt like!

This is the bra I ended up getting. I just bought another one off of Amazon because there are literally no more left in the stores! I love that these are the dilemmas I run into for school. It’s just another day in the life for me, but when I tell my friends that I spent all day tracking down a bra…well… they laugh haha. It’s a tough life I tell ya.

#4 Reuniting with friends

Friday night, was a reunion of three parts. I got to see one of my very best friends from Atlanta while she is here in the city for the week, I got to see 2 of my very best NYC friends who used to be my hall mates freshman year, and  I reunited again with alcohol….twas a lovely night! I’m actually not a big drinker. (alcohol is probably one of the most unhealthy things for your body, so I try to limit it) I will maybe have 1 or 2 drinks once a week, but I do enjoy going out with friends and having a good time! All in moderation.

This was my first outfit before going out. Right before we left I changed my mind and switched it up.

Outfit number 2. All in black…a little too dark for summer still, but I was feeling it.

Dark bar…terrible picture, but a great night : )

Also I took this picture on our walk while on the bra hunt uptown and thought it was pretty cool.

Have a fantastic weekend and enjoy your BBQs, swimming pools, drinks, football games (excited for the start of the college season!) family, friends, pets and sleeping in! Have adventures and laugh a lot!

Sara : )
